Welcome to Leo season! No, I don’t mean my dog’s days of summer, rather the astrological move into the sign of the lion-hearted leader. I’m not going to lie. I did like the name for my pup because I enjoy the qualities associated with Leo. Perhaps you’ve started to feel some of this energy in the air with the shift late last week. Leo’s ruling planet is the Sun, which is optimistic and supports growth.

I was a pre-teen when I got into astrology. I don’t recall exactly how, perhaps it was the multitude of quizzes I used to like doing in the magazines and reading my “type”, or something that my mom passed on, maybe a combination of the two. Every Christmas, I was sure to unwrap a paperback horoscope book for the coming year. It was one of my favourite presents and traditions. I would devour it, reading about planetary movement and days that were good for falling in love or money making or buying a house—all things that were very far from my realm of possibility, but I was also a dreamer.

It’s all good fun and also quite fascinating how the planets, the universe, pull us into certain macro states, the overall vibe of the time. (Trump getting elected? There’s astrology to explain that!) Ok, before I totally lose you in an eye roll, what I’m wanting to say about Leo season and astrology in general, is that it can be a great motivator. Whether to take action on something you’ve been dreaming of, reaching out to a lost connection, or spending some quiet time restoring energy, the cycles of the planets and the archetypes they represent have served as a great signpost guiding me to reflect on certain subjects or areas of life. The themes raised when analyzing astrology are timeless and yet always timely. Sometimes you need a push to look at a certain aspect of life or the human experience beyond your natural interests. It’s about perspective.

So what am I reflecting on this Leo season? Just a brief pause to check in on what I want to pour my energy into, with passion and vigour. And then hop to it! With a spirit of play and courage. Leo is all about action and growth. This is the time to embrace our own unique styles of leadership, to inspire and protect our pride, whether you view that as your team, your family or your special project.

A short, playful note this week to encourage you to take a moment to give yourself praise and attention for what you’ve accomplished and then bound forth with focus towards whatever is yet to be and you have your heart set on. Roar!

Read this on the web My dog dreams and it’s the cutest thing. His little feet move like he’s padding across the lawn, toes separating and contracting as he paws at an invisible treasure found in his travels. Sometimes he whelps and whimpers. I figure it’s a nightmare. I imagine him conjuring some big, scary dog with a baritone bark or watching me play in the backyard while he looks on longingly from behind the glass patio door. It breaks my heart to hear that sound. I always want to gently...

brown violin with case

Read this on the web Hey there, When I was in grade school I played the violin. It started in Grade Four with a number of kids convincing their parents to let them do it as a way to skip out on a portion of regular class so that we could squawk away in the classroom farthest from any life. Of course, my best friends were enrolled. It was an exclusive club. It felt special. The group had dwindled significantly by Grade Five. There were maybe a handful of us pint-sized performers whose parents...

woman doing a pushup

Read this on the web Hey there, This weekend I was out walking the dog and lifted my gaze up the long trunk of a tree that was twisted and bent. It had grown around obstacles, merging amicably with the rest of the forest. The light was filtering down forming a halo around a particular branch that pointed the way along the trail. I’ve been focusing my attention so much on the path before me, on spotting distractions in advance to train Leo to walk with me, on watching what he’s sniffing and...
